The Long Nights Moon

Long Nights MoonI was just too lazy to scout out a location for the December (Long Nights or Cold) full moon.  I took a couple of photos from the full moon on December 21, but didn’t like either.  This one is from the following night, the night after the full moon.  Its taken from my studio window.  The sky clouded up a bit before the moon made its way past my window. The Farmers Almanac notes that “during this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.”   (click on thumbnail image for larger image)  (more…)

Catching up with the blog - the winter solstice

Carmela and I placed five cameras around the area to capture the winter solstice through to the summer solstice.  Two cameras are on building tops in downtown Durham.  Two others are in Chapel Hill on a coffee shop and in the coffee shop.  And the fifth one is attached ouside our home in Durham.  I especially have big hopes for the two in Downtown Durham and the one inside the coffee shop.  I haven’t seen an indoor solor print yet, so this may the first of those.  The scene is from behind the coffee bar, looking across to the wall of windows at the front entrance.  Only time will tell what comes of these.

Beaver Moon

Beaver MoonNo beavers in this image.  But there was an unexplained glow spiraling around.  I’m guessing its car lights.  But if it was made by car lights, I wonder where the car was going.  Dodging a beaver?  Chasing the moon?  And what the heck is this image anyway?  What was I thinking, spending all this time scouting out a location for this shot and then messing up the exposure?  I could have stayed home and played with the cats.  I could have been practicing on my new guitar.  I could have been cruising the Internet.  And why is the Internet capitalized?  We don’t capitalize television or cable TV, so why is it Internet and not just internet?  Oh well, gotta go and get ready for the next full moon and the winter solstice
