Traveling to Chapel Hill, I brought along my 35mm Nikon with a zone plate body cap. Its a good travel camera, along with my Zero 2000 pinhole camera. I was visiting the UNC Hospital for further diagnosis of my cancer and then start treatment. My back is healing nicely, but I still need a walker to get around. The camera and light meter weigh me down more than usual, so I started hanging my camera off the walker. The UNC Health Care center has become a large complex with an interesting architectural mix of buildings. The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center that I’m visiting is just one facility in the Health Care complex. Staff and patients are much more international and culturally diverse than than when I worked there years ago. It was an exciting adventure to return. And I brought along my zone plate to capture some of the flavor of it.

With lots going on here this year, I had almost forgotten that I was scheduled to exhibit some pinhole prints at a local gallery. The exhibition was planned last year and was to go up the April 1. I called the gallery yesterday and explained that I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get the prints to them. I knew there were some people I could ask to deliver the prints, but wasn’t sure I wanted to get everything together and then ask someone at the last minute to help get them to the gallery. But the gallery owners were great about the whole thing and offered to come over to pick up the framed prints.

File this under “accessorize your surgery”. One of the most useful tools I have found myself using since my back surgery is the “reacher“. This is a device with a handle at one end that can grab things at the other end. As I am in a brace, up all day and should not be bending during the day, I use the reacher all day long. I use it for dressing in the morning, getting my socks out of the drawer, picking up things I drop, and an endless list of other uses. But, one problem came up quickly. What happens when you drop your reacher? Unless you have a backup reacher somewhere, you lose your reach.

A call for entries came in the mail a couple of weeks ago for a “Self-Portrait” exhibition at a local gallery. It had come the day after I happened to be taking some photos of myself and I decided I would submit something. The show is an annual one and I put something in it last year. Last year’s entry started out to be a pinhole camera made as a mask of my face, with one of my eyes containing the pinhole. I really liked the idea of myself as a pinhole camera, but my execution of it was embarassingly bad. So, instead, I just entered a pinhole print (figure 1, right).
